CentricStor Virtual Tape - Real Business Value

Contact Us Today! The modern data center is the central nervous system of today’s enterprise. It is a 24/7 machine that drives streamlined business process and increased business value.

Paradoxically, it can also be an environment fraught with complexity and risk.

How businesses balance these two competing forces is critical to their very survival. Fortunately, there is help in the form of tools that can allow the rapid adoption of business accelerating systems without burying the enterprise in IT complexity. One such tool is CentricStor tape virtualization, the process of consolidating storage resources, simplifying their management and reducing cost.

Independent Storage offers the CentricStor™ Virtual Tape System, designed and manufactured by Fujitsu Siemens Computers.

Consolidation

CentricStorCentricStor enables the decoupling of individual servers and their applications from physical drives. CentricStor permits Unix, Windows, AS/400 and mainframe systems to employ virtual storge to provide a multitude of high-performance and permanently available backup and archiving resources over a storage network. CentricStor's universal connectivity enables different servers and applications to access the virtual archive simultaneously—without the need for real drives for each individual system.

CentricStor integrates transparently into existing IT environments, making it unnecessary to modify existing application and backup scenarios. Since CentricStor virtualization replaces the direct link to the real storage peripherals, it is easy to leverage the latest drive technology without affecting the host systems and their applications.

By writing to a virtual data repository - a disk cache - backup applications are able to obtain all the throughput they need when they need it, error free. That data is, in turn, available instantly for recovery purposes, if needed. Data is written to physical tape as necessary. Mainframe data is stacked so that many volumes are combined on a single cartridge. Such stacking can eliminate as much as 90 percent of the physical media that would otherwise be needed.

Accelerating Backups

CentricStor makes all necessary resources available via the fast tape volume cache. A large number of virtual tape drives and magnetic tape cartridges are emulated within this virtual archive but with the performance of a hard disk. The virtual magnetic tape cartridges also are not subjected to any mechanical stresses, i.e. the servers no longer have to take any possible start/stop operation into consideration.

CentricStor tape virtualization can emulate hundreds of drives, enhancing performance and simplifying media management. At the same time it reduces the demand for tape drives and libraries at the back end, driving cost and complexity out of the environment.

Tape Virtualization Benefits

CentricStor cuts costs by:

  • Enabling tape drives to be shared, requiring fewer of them
  • Enabling more data on fewer cartridges
  • Consolidating into fewer automated libraries

CentricStor reduces complexity by:

  • Enabling backup consolidation
  • Servicing any server type
  • Simplifying administration
  • Reducing the likelihood of job failure
  • Reducing the number of tape storage devices to manage and support
  • Increasing scalability and flexibility

CentricStor adds value by:

  • Reducing job run times
  • Increasing data protection through mirroring
  • Improving availability, security and disaster recovery
  • Allowing host applications to run unchanged

Supported Environments

CentricStor supports all the relevant server platforms today, providing a powerful storage consolidation solution. It is compatible with the most popular storage management software such as Symantec Veritas NetBackup and IBM Tivoli Storage Manager.

CentricStor is designed to serve any open system platform. CentricStor supports the IBM mainframe platforms VM/VSE, MVS/OS390 and z/OS as well as BS2000/OSD.

CentricStor works with leading tape libraries and drives from various companies including the industry leader, Sun Microsystems. You may qualify to receive a detailed economic analysis of an existing CentricStor installation. To learn more about CentricStor, please contact us.
